Seborrheic Keratosis in Birmingham

The causes of Seborrheic Keratosis and Treatments available at Secret Aesthetics

Seborrheic keratosis is a type of skin growth that varies in appearance. They range from a millimetre to several centimetres in size, they can be the same colour as your skin or appear in mixed colours in varying shades from light ochre to dark brown. They have a smooth, waxy or wart-like surface and can appear as a single mark or grouped together. As their appearance is so varied, they might sometimes be mistaken for actinic keratosis. If you believe you might have actinic keratosis, it’s best to seek medical advice as this form of keratosis is a precancerous condition and would benefit from an immediate diagnosis.

WHAT CAUSES SEBORRHEIC KERATOSIS?

The precise cause of seborrheic keratosis is unknown, though they are extremely common, with about around a third of people having at least one by the age of 40 and about three-quarters of people having them by the age of 70. For this reason, it is believed that they are linked with the ageing process, though they also appear more frequently in families, which suggests that genetics may play a role.

They are not viral or bacterial, so they aren’t contagious and can’t be spread through skin to skin contact. While they don’t pose any threat to your health or well-being, you may wish to have them removed for cosmetic reasons, or if they are causing you discomfort because they can itch, bleed or cause you irritation from friction with clothing.

For the treatment of seborrheic keratosis, Secret Aesthetics offers both cryosurgery using CryoPen®, and laser removal using the Cutera® brand of aesthetic laser machines.

TREATMENTS FOR SEBORRHEIC KERATOSIS

Cryosurgery is a safe, effective, and clinically-proven procedure that freezes and destroys any abnormal skin tissue with extremely cold liquid nitrogen. Secret Aesthetics uses CryoPen® for this procedure because the fine nib makes it easy to precisely target the affected areas and remove any seborrheic keratosis while protecting the healthy tissue surrounding the affected area.

Cutera® technology is backed by 25 years of development, enabling Secret Aesthetics to provide safe, pain-free and effective treatments for seborrheic keratosis through the use of their innovative aesthetic laser machines.

Laser Genesis targets areas of seborrheic keratosis, at which point they absorb the light energy, which is converted to heat. The heat causes any damaged skin to blister and peel over time. The gentle heating of the deep layer of the skin stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen and elastin, which causes the skin to thicken and tighten.

In addition to the removal of seborrheic keratosis, there will be a reduction in wrinkles, fine lines and a narrowing of the pores. The tightening from this treatment will continue to improve for 18 months afterwards, at which time the results are at their maximum.

The pioneering technology of the Cutera® excel HR machine uses lasers at a combination of wavelengths to remove pigmented and vascular skin lesions, such as seborrheic keratosis, without the need for invasive surgery.

Through a consultation process, Secret Aesthetics will assess your concerns and your individual condition and advise on which of these Cutera® laser treatments might be best for you.
