About Laser Resurfacing:

Many head-to-head clinical studies have found this to be safer than CO2 with less downtime and risks but with the same power and results capacity. The Erbium:Yag laser is a 2940nm ablative laser meaning that it has the power to vaporise the skin allowing for full or fractional resurfacing. Fractional and fully ablative lasers have been used by physicians for many years. There are many different methods and indications for their use. The 2940nm laser energy can be used to cut, vaporize, or selectively remove skin and deeper tissues. In full ablation, the full surface of the targeted skin is vaporized, akin to mowing the lawn. In fractional ablation, parts/fractions of the targeted skin are vaporized akin to drilling lots of holes in the road.

Conditions such as wrinkles, sun damaged skin, scars, stretch marks and some types of skin lesions/disorders may be treated with the Sciton Erbium Yag Laser. Certain surgical procedures may use the laser as a cutting instrument. In some situations, laser treatments may be performed in combination with other surgical procedures or the HALO laser.

Skincare treatment programs and medications are usually prescribed both before and after laser skin treatments in order to enhance the results, reduce downtime and reduce the risk of adverse side effects.

You will have completed a thorough consultation and medical questionnaire ahead of the ProFractional Laser Resurfacing treatment day and will have been given your bespoke pre-procedure treatment kit with instructions to commence optimising the skin for the procedure. Baseline photos and/or videos are taken at the initial consultation.

Your medical history will be rechecked as well as checking that all pre-treatment instructions have been followed. As long as there have been no changes to your health or skin condition that could adversely effect or contraindicate the treatment on the day AND you have followed pre-care instructions correctly the treatment will proceed.

On the day of the treatment, we advise you to come accompanied so someone can take you home after the treatment. Baseline photos and/or videos and consent will be taken. You will arrive with no products on your face having only used the prescribed gentle cleanser. Your skin will be cleansed and sterilised by the assistant. The doctor will inject a combination of nerve blocks and/or local anaesthetics to the treatment area and if necessary mark out specific zones. Your eyes will be covered with eye shields. If an intraocular shield is used, anaesthetic eye drops and eye ointments are used to further reinforce protection of the eyes.

The doctor will check that you are numb. It is normal to feel pressure but the doctor will check that you cannot feel any pain. If need be, more anaesthetic will be injected. Depending on the length of the procedure, the anaesthetic may start to wear off so further injections may be required.

You will be laid flat for the procedure and will be awake and alert throughout. The assistant will also blow a cooling zimmer to the treatment area throughout the procedure to help cool the skin down. Cool wipes will also be placed over each treatment area to keep it hydrated and cool throughout the treatment. Once the full treatment is complete you will be raised up and the eyeshields removed. If you require any refreshments at this point, they will be given to you.

The assistant will clean the skin and apply a cooling, hydrating post-treatment mask. After a while, the assistant will take this off and clean your skin again before sealing it with a post-treatment serum. She will go through the aftercare that is written in your care instructions as well. Post-procedure baseline photos and/or videos will also be taken.

You will be booked in for an in-person review at approximately 14 days from the treatment day however you will be given a number for your daily virtual ward round with Dr Zoya until the day of your in-person review.

Laser Resurfacing Results:

The results continue to improve over the course of the year. The results seen from this procedure are considered permanent. There is no guarantee of what the final result will be.

If the ProFractional Laser Resurfacing treatment is being undertaken for scarring or stretch marks, the purpose is to improve them and more than 1 session is usually required. The results seen are considered permanent however it is imperative to follow the doctor’s recommendations as scars can start to look worse with depleted collagen loss as part of the natural ageing process because the underlying collagen acts as pillars of support for the scar tissue. It is important to note that no treatment modality in the world can guarantee 100% improvement of a scar or stretch mark. Although it may be possible, how much improvement is seen is variable but laser resurfacing remains the gold standard for many types of scars.“

All skin requires preparation for any form of ablative laser therapy as the treatment is essentially vaporizing the skin. The length of pre-treatment skin prep will be determined by your doctor at your initial consultation. It is imperative that you follow the prescribed skincare routine given to you by the doctor for your individual treatment indication and face/body location.

Skin Prep:

You must not have any active tan at the time of the procedure. To avoid this you must avoid and/or minimise sun exposure at least 4 weeks before the treatment and you must not sunbathe, use tanning creams or sunbeds at least 4 weeks before the procedure. The longer, the better.

You will be given a homecare kit with instructions on how to commence prepping your skin based on your individual skin type and skin concerns.

**The doctor may also prescribe a pigment suppressing cream such as the Alastin Illuminate Cream if they think you will be prone to hyperpigmentation. 1-2 pumps of this will be applied to the treatment area after cleansing morning and night but before the regenerative nectar

Darker Fitzpatrick types or more pigmentation prone patients may be prepped for 4-6 weeks prior.**

You must only use the skincare products listed above from your personal treatment pack and stop any active ingredients such as retinoids, acids, benzoyl peroxide and astringents at least 2 weeks before the procedure.

Health Prep:

Drink at least 2.5L of water throughout the day (this should be done generally but more so in the build up towards the treatment day. If you are sweating a lot due to heat or exercise this needs to be increased. Your hydration status is important for a good recovery. This should continue after treatment as well.

  • Pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Skin cancer in area being treated

  • On active cancer treatment

  • Isotretinoin in the previous 6 months.

  • Open wounds, excoriations or active acne in the area being treated.

  • Active infection in area being treated and/or active cold sore

  • Likely to not follow strict pre-care and aftercare routine

  • If you are a smoker, please note that this can greatly effect your healing journey as nicotine constricts blood vessels and the flow of good blood supply to the newly forming skin is critical for optimal recovery post-procedure.

  • Laser hair removal, electrolysis, aviclear, previous lasers over the area being treated that will reduce hair and/or sebaceous glands which in turn can increase the risk of poor healing and complications like scarring.

  • Sensitive skin and/or rosacea

  • History of cold sores/ herpes simplex virus.

  • History of keloid, hypertrophic or abnormal scarring

  • Medical conditions or drugs that impair bleeding

  • Medical conditions or drugs that impair wound healing

Although the majority of patients do not experience complications, you should be aware of all of them in order to make an informed decision. Some are more expected side effects as part of the natural healing and recovery process such as swelling, redness, feeling of heat, bruising and peeling skin. It is imperative you follow the strict aftercare routine prescribed to you – this is the key determinant of your recovery.

  • Swelling & Heat Sensation – This is to be expected and is variable from significant to mild but usually settles in 48 hrs to 5 days.
  • Bruising – Bruises and rarely large bruises called haematomas may form in and around areas that have been injected for anaesthetic purposes. This can also rarely occur over areas of deeper resurfacing.
  • Infection – Although infection following laser skin treatment is unusual, bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic infections can occur. Herpes simplex virus infections around the mouth or other areas of the face can occur following a laser treatment. This applies to both individuals with a past history of Herpes simplex virus infections and individuals with no known history of Herpes simplex virus infections in the mouth area. Specific medications may be prescribed and taken both prior to and following the laser treatment procedure in order to suppress an infection from this virus. Should any type of skin infection occur, additional treatment including antibiotics may be necessary.
  • Scarring – Although normal healing after the procedure is expected, abnormal scars may occur both in the skin and deeper tissues. In rare cases, hypertrophic or keloid scars may result. Scars may be unattractive and of different color than the surrounding skin.
  • Burns – Laser energy can produce burns. Adjacent structures including the eyes may be injured or permanently damaged by the laser beam. Burns are rare yet represent the effect of heat produced within the tissues by laser energy. Additional treatment may be necessary to treat laser burns
  • Redness – Laser treatments may potentially change the natural color of your skin. Skin redness can last several weeks to 6 months+ following laser skin treatment.
  • Post Inflammatory Hyper/Hypopigmentation (PIH) There is the possibility of irregular colour variations within the skin including areas that are both lighter and darker (hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation). A line of demarcation between normal skin and skin treated with lasers can occur. Rarely, colour changes can develop much later after treatment as a delayed side-effect. PIH is more common on darker skin types. Thankfully it usually spontaneously improves. Improvement can be speeded up by the addition of topical treatment. Duration usually depends on the severity of the inflammation that created it in the first place. Complete resolution can take anything from a few weeks to 6 months depending on severity. Rarely it could be permanent. Sun exposure is the most common aggravating factor and this is why strict sun avoidance is important in the first few weeks following treatment. If the aftercare instructions are strictly adhered to one is much more likely to avoid this type of complication.
  • Pseudo-hypopigmentation – Hypopigmentation is the medical term for lightening of the skin. After fully ablative laser resurfacing it is normal for the skin to be slightly lighter. This is due to the way that the organised collagen in the new skin reflects more light. This gives an impression of a slightly lighter colour. This effect is called pseudo-hypopigmentation. True hypopigmentation is lack of melanin production due to damage caused to melanin producing cells by thermal injury from the laser. This is rare with fully ablative erbium yag resurfacing as the new skin is repopulated with new melanin producing cells from the deeper adnexal structures which are a reasonable distance away from the treated surface of the skin. If true hypopigmentation occurs, it can take many months to recover and can indeed be permanent.
  • Scleral show/ Ectropion – Resurfacing around the eyes can cause a skin tightening effect which rarely can cause excessive skin tightening that can cause the eyelid to retract down leading to excessive scleral show or eversion of the eyelid margins and an inability to completely close the eye. Mild cases may improve with non-surgical management but more severe cases may require corrective oculoplastic surgery.
  • Cysts, milia and/or acne eruption – Due to the need of using heavier, skin protecting products constantly for the initial recovery period, it is not uncommon to develop temporary clogged pores which can develop in to cysts or milia or sometimes an acne-like eruption due to the heaviness of the product ingredients. This will be reviewed and will eventually subside. It is more common in those prone to acne.
  • Dry, tight, irritated and/or itchy skin – As the new skin heals, it is normal to feel dry, tight or develop sensitive, sensitized or itchy skin. This will be monitored in the daily virtual ward round and is greatly reduced by following the aftercare instructions and ensuring the skin is kept moist and covered with the given creams, sprays and/or balms during the recovery period
  • Loss of Hair In Treated Area – Although this laser does not target hair, in certain instances of deeper resurfacing, the hair follicles may be damaged and the hair may not grow back in these areas
  • Skin Tissue Pathology – Laser energy directed at skin lesions may potentially vaporize the lesion. Laboratory examination of the tissue specimen may not be possible.
  • Visible Skin Patterns – Laser treatment procedures may produce visible patterns within the skin. The occurrence of this is not predictable.
  • Patient Failure to Follow Through – Patient follow through following a laser skin treatment procedure is important. You must follow the instructions provided to you for post-treatment daily virtual ward round reviews with Dr Zoya as well as post operative instructions concerning appropriate restriction of activity, use of prescribed skincare and/or dressings, and use of sun protection need to be followed in order to avoid potential complications, increased pain, and unsatisfactory result. Your physician may recommend that you utilize a long-term skin care program to enhance healing following a laser skin treatment.
  • Damaged Skin – Skin that has been previously treated with chemical peels or dermabrasion, or damaged by bums, electrolysis (hair removal treatments), or radiation therapy may heal abnormally or more slowly following treatment by lasers or other surgical techniques. The occurrence of this is not predictable. Additional treatments may be necessary.
  • Distortion of Anatomic Features – Laser skin treatments can produce distortion of the appearance of the eyelids, mouth, and other visible anatomic landmarks. The occurrence of this is not predictable. Should this occur, additional treatment, including surgery, may be necessary.
  • Post-resurfacing contact dermatitis – This is a form of increased sensitivity of the skin that is encountered by a proportion of individuals post laser resurfacing. In some cases it can be quite severe. Mild irritants can trigger a disproportionately large irritation of the skin (burning and itching) that then can result in prolonged redness and darkening of the skin. It is usually treated by topical steroid ointment if it occurs and eventually spontaneously settles. Triggering can be minimised by the use of mild perfume free cleansers and skin products post treatment such as the ones given in your homecare kit.
  • Unsatisfactory Result – There is the possibility of an unsatisfactory result from these procedures. Laser procedures may result in unacceptable visible deformities, skin slough, loss of function, and permanent color changes in the skin. You may be disappointed with the final result from laser treatments.
  • Pain – During the healing period, you may experience some discomfort, especially initially once the anaesthetic wears off. Very infrequently, chronic pain may occur after laser skin treatment procedures.
  • Pores – Pores may rarely get worse with laser resurfacing
  • Vision Damage or Blindness – This is extremely rare and can only occur if the laser beam hits the eye however we use intraocular shields and/or fully shielded eye protection to minimize the chance of this happening.
  • Damage to Teeth – This is exceedingly rare and can only occur if the laser beam hits the tooth. We cover and protect the teeth to minimize the chance of this happening.
  • Allergic Reactions – In rare cases, local allergies to tape, preservatives used in cosmetics or topical preparations have been reported. Systemic reactions which are more serious may result from drugs used during medical procedures and prescription medicines. Allergic reactions may require additional treatment.
  • Lack of Permanent Results – Laser or other treatments may not completely improve or prevent future skin disorders, lesions, or wrinkles. Additional procedures or surgery may be necessary to further tighten loose skin.
  • Pigment removal – If you have any tattoos including microblading, tattooed eyebrows or lip blush, the laser may remove this as it vaporizes the skin. If this is directly in an area that is being treated, that is unavoidable however even if it isn’t, all necessary steps are taken to minimize the risk of effecting these areas but no guarantee can be made.
  • Delayed Healing – It may take longer than anticipated for healing to occur after laser treatments. Slower than normal skin healing may result in thin, easily injured skin. This is different from the normal redness in skin after a laser treatment.
  • Erosive pustular dermatosis – This is an extremely rare dermatological condition that can be triggered by any type of skin injury including laser. There are only a few case reports worldwide following laser sugery. It is an exceptionally rare consequence but effectively amounts to the failure of the skin to completely heal after treatment. Management would be undertaken in a specialist dermatology unit if this was to occur but the consequence of this could be permanent scarring.
  • Fire – Inflammable agents, surgical drapes and tubing, hair, and clothing may be ignited by laser energy. Laser energy used in the presence of supplemental oxygen increases the potential hazard of fire. Some anesthetic gases may support combustion.
  • Laser Smoke (plume) – Laser smoke is noxious to those who come in contact with it. This smoke may represent a possible bio-hazard.
  • Unknown Risks – There is the possibility that additional risk factors of laser skin treatments may be discovered.
  • Local Anaesthesia & Nerve Blocks – Both local anaesthetic and nerve blocks involve risk. The numbing agents can sometimes temporarily effect nerves supplying muscles which can temporarily limit the effected muscle movement. This usually subsides once the anaesthetic wears off. The adrenaline in certain blocks can make you feel jittery or experience a racing heart, restlessness or palpitations. There is the possibility of allergies, anaphylaxis, complications, injury, and even death from all forms of anaesthesia and sedation.
  • Additional Treatment or Surgery Necessary – You may have combination therapy with topical medications and/or injected medications such as Kenalog if you are having the treatment for scarring. These topical or injectable agents can cause thinning of the skin around the treated area and can incite an allergic reaction. There are many variable conditions which influence the long-term result of laser skin treatments. You may require more treatments in the future. Even though risks and complications occur infrequently, the risks cited are the ones that are particularly associated with these procedures. Other complications and risks can occur but are even more uncommon. Should complications occur, procedures, surgery, or other treatments may be necessary. The practice of medicine and surgery is not an exact science. Although good results are expected, there is no guarantee or warranty, expressed or implied, on the results that may be obtained.

Aftercare for Laser Resurfacing

The aim is heat control and keeping the newly healing skin intensely moisturised and out of the sun for the first 10 days (or until the skin has adequately healed). You cannot allow the skin to dry or crust. Strict and correct aftercare is the number one predictor of an effective outcome without complications. Minimising sun exposure for the following months is strongly recommended and gentle skincare continued for at least 1 month after as the new skin should be treated and protected like baby skin. You will receive detailed step-by-step aftercare instructions tailored to your treatment concerns and skin type as well as a homecare kit and prophylactic medications.

You should have someone stay with you for at least the first 48 hours.

You will be followed-up with a virtual ward round with the treating doctor and booked in for an in-person review around 2 weeks after the treatment. If you are travelling from far, we recommend you arrange a hotel or local stay so we can easily review you sooner if need be.

You cannot commence any acids, exfoliating agents or actives for at least a month after treatment. Please discuss the re-introduction of any new products with your doctor first.

I’ve been using Secret Aesthetics for about 3 years now and in the last couple of months alone i’ve seen Dr’s Zoya, Haroon and Taran for various treatments. All are incredibly professional, as well as kind and welcoming and always explain procedures fully. It’s important to me to see practitioners that want to do the right thing for me, rather than just take my money, and that’s what you get here. It’s also a lovely experience going to such a beautiful clinic. I wouldn’t go anywhere else. Thank you Secret Aesthetics.

Dr Haroon is an amazing, highly skilled person who has an extremely calming aura about him that instantly makes you feel at ease! I would highly recommend him! I will continue to see him for many years to come. Dr Haroon thank you so much for giving me a fresh boost of confidence X

I am never disappointed with my visits to the clinic. I was unable to attend my original appointment due to childcare and Dr Zoya was very accommodating. I managed to get another appointment in the same week. This time I met Dr Haroon. He was a pleasure to work with & listened to all of my concerns. I left the clinic satisfied. I cant wait for my next appointment.

I am 48 years old and I’ve never had any aesthetic treatments done before. I have been keen to but too anxious to take the plunge mostly because of the fear of looking like someone else in the mirror! There’s a lot of horror stories out there!! However, after 2 years of colour correction under my eyes, buying endless products and nothing working, I felt quite defeated!! I booked myself in at Secret Aesthetics to have tear trough filler and mid face filler done. Dr Naqvi was exceptional and definitely lives up to his name as ‘the’ Industry expert. I was provided with not just all the essential information I needed to make my decision but I was given the respect, understanding and time to decide on what was best suited to me. After deciding on what I wanted, Dr Naqvi did a mid face filler and Botox on my forhead. I am blown away by the results!!! I looked at myself this morning and could not believe how much of an impact such a little tweek has made. I look rested and fresher faced overnight and I am the younger me. Thank you Dr Naqvi and all at Secret Aesthetics

Met with Dr Haroon and he is absolutely fantastic. He takes his time to explain everything first, which I really appreciated. It's clear he loves what he does as it shines through. I will definitely be back and will only ever see Dr Haroon from now on. :)
