WHat is Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)?
Bruxism is the medical term for prolonged unconscious teeth grinding and teeth clenching whilst asleep or awake which can lead to secondary headaches, earaches, dental problems and facial pain.
Dental problems can include increased teeth sensitivity, chipped teeth and loss of tooth enamel. Facial problems can include jaw pain especially in the sensitive temporomandibular (TMJ) joint and a compensatory increase in the masseter muscles which can lead to the appearance of a severely wide set jaw.
Injecting small doses of botulinum toxin in to the masseters and temporalis muscles, weakens them enough to prevent involuntary teeth clenching and grinding whilst sparing voluntary movements such as chewing and facial expressions.
How can Botox help Teeth Grinding?
Botulinum toxin type A, or Botox as it is commonly known, is a purified neurotoxin derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.
It works by blocking the nerve supply to muscle thereby restricting their movement. Clinical grade Botox is a prescription only medication extracted, purified and diluted from the original nerve agent. Once injected, it temporarily weakens the contraction of the targeted muscle. The masseter is a large quadrilateral muscle with a superficial and deep head found on bilaterally in the lower face. The temporalis muscle is a broad fan shaped muscle located bilaterally on each side of the head filling the temporal fossa. The two work together to control jaw movement physiologically in chewing and pathologically in teeth grinding and chronic teeth clenching. Targeted small doses of Botox can weaken the muscles enough to strike a balance so that facial movements such as chewing are not affected but unconscious teeth clenching and grinding are not possible allowing for symptomatic relief.
Teeth grinding treatment procedure
You will begin with a consultation, facial analysis and evaluation of your medical history and personal expectations by our doctor.
The treatment will include multiple injection sites of small dose Botox across bilateral masseter and temporalis landmarks to weaken the muscles enough to prevent involuntary teeth clenching and grinding whilst sparing voluntary movements such as chewing and facial expressions.
Results and Side effects
It usually takes 3 weeks for results to become apparent. Results usually last 3-6 months.
Immediately after you may commonly experience: tenderness and redness in the area treated. If present this can last 72 hours. A few individuals notice a headache which usually resolves within 48 hours.
Bruising can develop at injection points. Usually minimal but variable, some individuals are more prone to bruising naturally and take longer for the bruise to heal. We do a thorough medical evaluation before hand to reduce the risk of this but also advise limiting alcohol intake for 48 hours pre and post procedure to aid recovery.
Aftercare for Teeth Grinding Treatment
Do not lie down for 4 hours. This will prevent Botox tracking in to the orbit of your eye causing eyelid drooping. After this you can lie down/sleep in any position.
Avoid touching, applying makeup, massaging or rubbing the treated areas for 12 hours, including any facials. This will reduce the risk of the Botox spreading from its targeted area. Avoid exercise for 24 hours. Avoid extensive sun exposure and heat ie) hot showers/sauna/steam rooms for 48 hours. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
Wait at least 7 days before any chemical peels, laser or microdermabrasion treatments.
