If you are looking into laser treatment for pigmentation, sun damage, redness, enlarged pores, fine lines or acne scarring, one of the hardest parts can be working out which technology you actually need.
BBL HERO, HALO and Laser Genesis can all improve the appearance and quality of the skin, but they work in very different ways. BBL HERO is particularly useful when unwanted colour, such as pigmentation or redness, is the main concern. HALO resurfaces the skin to improve texture and stimulate collagen, while Laser Genesis offers gentler, non-ablative rejuvenation with very little interruption to everyday life.
At Secret Aesthetics in Birmingham, we often see patients who arrive asking for a particular laser because they have heard about it or seen it online. Once we assess their skin, another technology may actually be better suited to what they want to improve.
A more useful starting point is therefore not “Which laser is best?” but “What is actually causing the change I can see in my skin?”
What Is BBL HERO and How Does It Work?
BBL HERO uses BroadBand Light to deliver controlled pulses of light into the skin. Unlike a conventional laser, which uses a specific wavelength, BBL uses different filters to select ranges of light depending on what we are trying to treat.
For pigmentation, the light is absorbed by excess melanin within brown spots and areas of sun damage. This heats the unwanted pigment so that it gradually breaks down and becomes less visible as the skin renews.
For redness, the light is directed towards haemoglobin within visible blood vessels instead.
This ability to target different colours within the skin makes BBL HERO particularly useful for:
- sun damage and photodamage
- freckles and brown spots
- pigmentation
- facial redness
- rosacea
- broken capillaries
- uneven skin tone
The main benefit is generally a clearer, more even-looking complexion rather than a significant change in the physical texture of the skin.
At Secret Aesthetics, we often consider BBL when colour is the dominant concern. Someone with scattered brown spots across the cheeks alongside redness around the nose, for example, may benefit more from targeting those visible colour changes than immediately moving to a resurfacing laser.
Is BBL Good for Sun Damage and Pigmentation?
Yes, particularly when sun damage is showing itself through visible changes in colour.
Photodamage rarely appears as one perfectly defined brown spot. More often, we see a mixture of freckles, patches of pigmentation, uneven tone and sometimes redness across areas that have received repeated sun exposure.
BBL can treat larger areas of this visible photodamage, including the face, neck and chest.
However, identifying the pigmentation correctly comes first. Its type and depth, your natural skin tone and recent sun exposure can all affect whether BBL is appropriate. Conditions such as melasma need particularly careful assessment because heat and light can sometimes make the pigmentation worse.
This is why we assess what is creating the pigmentation before deciding whether BBL, or another laser or light treatment, is the right approach.

What Is Laser Genesis and How Does It Work?
Laser Genesis is a non-ablative laser treatment using a 1064 nm Nd wavelength.
Rather than removing or resurfacing the outer layer of the skin, it gently delivers controlled heat into the deeper dermis. This heat supports collagen remodelling while also targeting small vessels that can contribute to diffuse redness.
Because the surface of the skin remains intact, Laser Genesis can improve several aspects of skin quality without the recovery associated with resurfacing.
We may use it for:
- diffuse redness and flushing
- fine lines
- enlarged pores
- mild acne scarring
- uneven texture
- general skin quality
One of its main benefits is that results can be built gradually with very little interruption to everyday life. Mild temporary redness can occur, but there is no traditional peeling or resurfacing recovery.
At Secret Aesthetics, a typical Laser Genesis programme may involve around six treatments spaced approximately two to three weeks apart, although this depends on the skin and what we are treating.
It can be particularly useful when changes are relatively mild and someone wants progressive improvement with minimal downtime.
Is Laser Genesis Good for Pores and Fine Lines?
Yes, particularly when these changes are relatively mild. The controlled heating produced by Laser Genesis supports collagen remodelling. Over a course of treatments, this can help the skin look smoother and make fine lines and enlarged pores less noticeable. It particularly useful when gradual improvement and minimal downtime are priorities.
What Is HALO Laser and How Does It Work?
HALO is a hybrid fractional laser that allows us to treat the skin at different depths.
It combines ablative and non-ablative wavelengths within the same treatment. The ablative element creates controlled microscopic channels within the skin to encourage surface renewal, while the non-ablative wavelength delivers energy deeper into the tissue to stimulate remodelling.
HALO is also fractional. This means it does not remove the entire surface of the skin. Instead, it creates microscopic treatment zones surrounded by untreated skin, which helps support the healing process.
Because it works at different depths, HALO can be particularly useful for:
- uneven or rough skin texture
- enlarged pores
- fine lines
- acne scarring
- pigmentation and sun damage
- overall skin quality
HALO therefore goes beyond treating colour alone. Its main strength is improving the physical quality and texture of the skin while stimulating renewal and collagen production.
At Secret Aesthetics, we may start considering HALO when skin concerns have become more established. If the skin feels rough, pores are more visible, fine lines are becoming noticeable or acne has left textural scarring, resurfacing may provide more meaningful improvement than a gentler non-ablative treatment alone.
The intensity can also be adjusted according to the condition of the skin and the amount of correction required.

Which Laser Is Best for Redness?
The right treatment depends on the type of redness we can see. BBL HERO targets haemoglobin within visible blood vessels, making it particularly useful when redness, rosacea or broken capillaries are the main concern.
Laser Genesis works differently. Its controlled dermal heating can target small vessels that contribute to more diffuse redness and flushing, while also supporting collagen remodelling. This can make Laser Genesis particularly useful when redness sits alongside relatively mild concerns such as enlarged pores, fine lines or uneven texture.
The choice is therefore less about which technology is stronger and more about the type of redness being treated and what else is happening within the skin.

Which Laser Is Best for Acne Scarring?
The type and depth of acne scarring make a significant difference to treatment choice.
Laser Genesis uses controlled dermal heating to encourage collagen remodelling without removing the surface of the skin. It can therefore be useful for milder textural changes, particularly when post-acne redness or generally uneven skin quality is also present.
HALO provides a greater degree of resurfacing. By creating fractional treatment zones at different depths, it encourages both surface renewal and deeper remodelling, making it more appropriate when acne scarring and textural irregularity are more established.
For deeper or more significant scars, we may need to progress to more intensive resurfacing. Secret Aesthetics also offers ProFractional and fully ablative laser resurfacing, allowing the level of resurfacing to be matched more closely to the severity of the scarring.
The aim is not to choose the strongest treatment automatically. For milder cases, we would avoid using a more aggressive laser than the skin needs. Equally, a very gentle treatment may not provide enough structural remodelling for deeper scars.
How Do We Choose Between BBL, HALO and Laser Genesis?
Although each technology has its strengths, treatment choice is rarely based on one concern alone.
We look at your skin type, the pattern and severity of pigmentation or redness, the depth of any scarring, previous treatments, medical history, sun exposure and how much recovery time is realistic.
Sometimes one treatment is enough. Sometimes a staged approach gives us more control. Where pigmentation and textural sun damage occur together, for example, BBL and HALO may complement one another.
Ultimately, the most appropriate treatment is the one that matches what is actually happening within your skin, rather than simply the laser you have heard the most about.

FAQs About Laser Skin Treatments
Can I Have Laser Treatment in Autumn and Winter?
Autumn and winter are often practical times to plan treatments that require careful sun avoidance, particularly resurfacing procedures. Treatment timing still depends on recent sun exposure, upcoming travel and the particular technology being used.
How Long Should I Avoid the Sun Before Laser Treatment?
This varies between technologies and individual skin types. Recent tanning or significant sun exposure can affect whether it is safe to proceed, so tell your practitioner about recent holidays, tanning and any planned sun exposure during your consultation.
Can Laser Treatment Be Used on the Neck and Chest?
Yes, several technologies offered at Secret Aesthetics can be used beyond the face. BBL HERO is commonly used on areas of visible sun damage, while the suitability of resurfacing treatments for the neck or chest needs to be assessed individually because these areas heal differently from facial skin.
Do I Need to Stop Retinol Before Laser Treatment?
Potentially. Retinoids, exfoliating acids and other active skincare may need to be stopped around certain laser procedures. Your practitioner will advise you based on the laser being used and your current skincare routine.
Can I Wear Make-Up After Laser Treatment?
It depends on the treatment. After a non-ablative procedure such as Laser Genesis, normal activities can usually resume quickly. Resurfacing treatments require more careful aftercare, and you may need to avoid make-up while the skin is healing.
How Do I Know Which Laser Treatment to Book?
If you are deciding between several technologies, it is usually better to start with a consultation rather than choosing a laser yourself.
Pigmentation, redness, scarring and textural changes can look similar but may need very different approaches. Assessing the skin first allows the treatment and settings to be selected according to what is actually being treated.
