Migraine Relief with Botox
Migraines are estimated to effect up to a ¼ of the British population...
Chronic migraines are estimated to affect 2% of the population. These are defined as headaches on at least 15 or more days per month of which at least 8 days are migraine. Botox carefully administered in medical doses has been clinically proven to reduce the frequency of migraines and improve the quality of life in chronic migraine sufferers. According to the American Migraine Foundation ‘patients reported that 2 Botox courses reduced the number of headache days by 50%’.
This is a highly advanced medical procedure that we offer at Secret Aesthetics one which requires experience and expertise as it involves intramuscular injections in to the head and neck near several great arteries, veins and nerves that supply the brain.
Botulinum toxin type A, or Botox as it is commonly known, is a purified neurotoxin derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It works by blocking the nerve supply to muscle thereby restricting their movement. Clinical grade medical Botox is a prescription only medication extracted, purified and diluted from the original paralytic agent. Once injected, it temporarily weakens the contraction of the targeted muscle, resulting in the softening and relaxing of the lines and wrinkles caused by the underlying muscle. Although there is no reversal agent to date, it is naturally metabolised over months.
There are several theories as to how Botox helps with migraines but we do not know definitively. It has been suggested that Botox might relax muscles around the head and thereby reduce blood pressure within the brain or that Botox might reduce the nerves’ ability to send pain signals during a migraine
The National Institute for Clinical Excellence’s systematic review of trials in patients with chronic migraines who had Botox injected in 31-39 sites in their head and neck vs those who did not found a dramatically significant reduction in the frequency of their headaches and an improvement in their quality of life.
Botox for Migraine Relief Procedure
You will begin with a consultation and evaluation of your medical history to ensure you fit the criteria of patients who are likely to benefit from this procedure.
The treatment will include 31 small intramuscular injections across the forehead, sides of the head and the neck with high dose Botox. The muscles targeted will include: corrugator, procerus, frontalis, temporalis, occipitalis, cervical paraspinal muscle group and trapezius. Muscles are targeted equally and bilaterally.

It usually takes 2 weeks for results to become apparent. Results usually last 3-6 months.
Aftercare for Migraine Botox
Do not lie down for 4 hours. This will prevent Botox tracking in to the orbit of your eye causing eyelid drooping. After this you can lie down/sleep in any position.
Avoid touching, applying makeup, massaging or rubbing the treated areas for 12 hours, including any facials. This will reduce the risk of the Botox spreading from its targeted area. Avoid exercise for 24 hours. Avoid extensive sun exposure and heat ie) hot showers/sauna/steam rooms for 48 hours. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
Wait at least 7 days before any chemical peels, laser or microdermabrasion treatments.
