Age Spots in Birmingham

How to prevent them and the treatments available at Secret Aesthetics

Age spots are a form of hyperpigmentation and they appear as darker patches that lay flush with the skin. While they might be thought of as a natural part of ageing because so many people have them appear as they get older, they are actually caused by long-term exposure to the sun’s harmful rays. UV rays in sunlight prompt the body to produce melanin, resulting in dark areas on the skin.

HOW TO PREVENT AGE SPOTS?

As age spots are caused by direct contact with UV rays, the best course of prevention is to cover up. When outside, make sure that you have all parts of your body covered, including your arms and legs. Wear a sun hat that has a brim or peak to protect your neck, too. In the UK, the sun’s rays are at their most harmful in the middle of the day when the sun is at its highest, so it’s best to seek shade at this time. Though it’s tempting to spend hours exposed on the beach when you are holidaying overseas, it’s important to take regular breaks from the sun to avoid the development of age spots.

In the UK we tend to associate sun damage to the skin with summer at home and with holidays abroad, though UV rays are a consistent danger even on cloudy days. Therefore, it’s good to get into the habit of wearing sunscreen throughout the year.

If you have any age spots, Secret Aesthetics have treatments in the form of advanced laser equipment, chemical peels, skincare and microneedling, a combination of which may work best for your specific concerns.

TREATMENTS FOR AGE SPOTS

The Cutera excel HR™ laser is specifically designed for treating hyperpigmentation. This specific technology combines two different types of laser wavelengths for extreme power and versatility. With this small handheld device, you can experience superior and more significant results in far less time than you could expect with typical laser treatments for hyperpigmentation.

VI Chemical Peels are a range of medical grade peels that are formulated at a medium strength. Suitable for all skin types, they give very similar clinical results to stronger peels in a form that is gentler on your skin. They suitable for use on the face, hands, neck, chest and back.

There are five different active ingredients in this range of peels, all at varying strengths. For age spots, Secret Aesthetics would recommend a peel that has high concentrations of either Retin-A or Ascorbic Acid as these are particularly effective in targeting and resolving hyperpigmentation issues.

Obagi is a specialist pharmaceutical company founded by leading skincare experts, and their effectiveness is backed up by thirty years of research, testing and scientific development. Their products enable us to bring you treatments that can help to minimise the appearance of premature ageing, skin damage, and hyperpigmentation. Each product in this medical grade skincare range is designed to combat a specific skin condition. If you suffer from age spots, consider Obagi Nu-Derm® Clear, which is particularly effective in the correction of hyperpigmentation.

Dermapen 4 is considered to be the most advanced Microneedling device on the market. It works by gliding over the skin at high speed, creating fine, fractional channels. The body’s natural response to the micro-injuries triggers a process of repair, stimulating the dermal fibroblasts into generating new collagen and elastin, which both act as a scaffold to keep the skin tight and plump. The result is a complete resurfacing of the skin. Secret Aesthetics recommend Dermapen 4 as the final stage after having initial treatments for age spots.
