Beyond Injectables: The Best Aesthetic Treatments for Better Skin and Long-Term Skin Health

When patients start exploring aesthetic treatments, one of the most common questions is: “Which treatment is right for my skin concern?”

The answer depends on what you want to improve. Dull or congested skin needs a different approach from redness, pigmentation, acne scarring or loss of firmness.

At Secret Aesthetics in Birmingham, treatments including HydraFacial, Laser Genesis, BBL HERO, microneedling, radiofrequency microneedling and exosomes are designed to address different aspects of skin health, from hydration and congestion to pigmentation, redness, texture and firmness.

These treatments are not alternatives to injectables, which address different concerns and may form part of a wider treatment plan where appropriate. Instead, the focus here is on treatments that work directly with the skin, depending on what you would like to improve.

What Are Therapy-Led Aesthetic Treatments?

Therapy-led treatments use technologies or techniques designed to address the skin, hair follicles or underlying collagen rather than primarily changing facial shape.

The important point is that they are not interchangeable. Someone with congestion and dehydration requires a very different approach from someone with sun-induced pigmentation, persistent redness or acne scarring.

In practice, treatment selection usually comes down to three questions:

  • What are we trying to treat? Pigment, redness, hair, texture, pores, scarring, laxity or general skin quality?
  • How established is the concern? Mild surface changes may require a gentler approach than deeper textural or collagen-related changes.
  • How much downtime is realistic? The most intensive treatment is not automatically the most appropriate one.

If you’re unsure which treatment is appropriate for your concern, we can assess your skin during a consultation and explain which options are most relevant to you.

Is HydraFacial Good for Maintaining Healthy Skin?

HydraFacial is often a useful starting point when the main concern is congestion, dehydration, dullness or maintaining generally healthy-looking skin.

The treatment uses its Vortex-Fusion system to combine exfoliation, extraction and hydration. At Secret Aesthetics, the protocol includes cleansing and exfoliation, extraction of debris from pores, hydration and the delivery of antioxidants and peptides.

The appeal is partly its versatility. It can be adapted to the condition of the skin rather than following exactly the same protocol for every patient.

For someone whose skin is mildly congested, we may focus more heavily on clearing pores and removing accumulated debris. For dull or dehydrated skin, hydration and improving overall radiance may be the priority.

Where the main concern is more established pigmentation, persistent redness, scarring or loss of firmness, however, HydraFacial may not be the treatment we would prioritise. Depending on the skin assessment, we may instead look at a more targeted treatment such as BBL HERO, Laser Genesis, microneedling or Secret RF.

HydraFacial can also sit comfortably within a longer-term skin routine because there is no significant downtime.

What Does Laser Genesis Do for the Skin?

Laser Genesis is a non-ablative treatment that uses 1064 nm Nd laser energy to gently heat the deeper layers of the skin without removing or resurfacing the surface.

In simpler terms, this controlled heat encourages the skin to gradually repair and remodel itself. For patients, the aim is smoother, more even-looking skin, with improvements developing progressively rather than relying on an immediate or dramatic change.

It can be considered for concerns including:

  • Redness and flushing
  • Rosacea
  • Uneven texture
  • Enlarged-looking pores
  • Fine lines
  • Scarring
  • Some pigmentation concerns

One reason Laser Genesis fits well into longer-term skin plans is its relatively low downtime. It can be particularly useful when someone wants to improve overall skin quality while continuing with their normal routine.

A course may be recommended, commonly around six treatments spaced several weeks apart, depending on the concern being treated.

This is an important distinction in skin treatment. A quick glow and gradual improvement in skin quality are different goals. Where we are trying to improve concerns such as redness, texture or fine lines over time, a course of controlled treatments may be more appropriate than looking for a dramatic result from a single session.

Is BBL Good for Pigmentation and Redness?

When pigmentation, sun damage, freckles, redness or visible small blood vessels are more prominent, BBL HERO may become more relevant.

BBL stands for BroadBand Light. Secret Aesthetics uses Sciton BBL HERO, which delivers filtered light to specific targets within the skin. Different filters and settings can be selected according to what is being treated. This matters because a brown sunspot and facial redness are not the same problem, even though both can contribute to an uneven complexion.

BBL HERO can be used for concerns including hyperpigmented lesions such as sunspots and freckles, redness, rosacea and broken capillaries. Where these visible pigment or vascular changes are the main concern, BBL HERO may be more appropriate than a treatment primarily focused on hydration or texture.

If redness is more diffuse or the aim is gradual improvement in overall skin quality with relatively little downtime, we may consider Laser Genesis instead. Where scarring, uneven texture or loss of firmness is the greater concern, a collagen-focused treatment such as microneedling or Secret RF may be more appropriate.

The patient’s skin type, medical history, recent sun exposure and the nature of the pigmentation all matter before treatment. Not every brown mark should simply be treated with light, and active tanning is a contraindication to BBL treatment at Secret Aesthetics.

This is why assessment matters more than choosing a device based on a symptom or something you have seen online.

Microneedling or Radiofrequency Microneedling: What’s the Difference?

For patients primarily concerned with texture, pores and collagen, microneedling becomes another option.

At Secret Aesthetics, we offer Dermapen4 microneedling, which creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin. The purpose is to initiate the skin’s natural repair response and stimulate collagen remodelling.

Radiofrequency microneedling takes this concept further. Secret RF combines microneedling with controlled radiofrequency energy delivered into the skin. The needle depth and radiofrequency energy can be adjusted according to the patient’s skin and treatment objective.

In practice, this gives us another level of treatment when the concern extends beyond relatively superficial texture.

For milder textural concerns, conventional microneedling may be appropriate. Where there is more established acne scarring, laxity, enlarged pores or loss of firmness, we may look at Secret RF because it combines the controlled injury from microneedling with thermal stimulation from radiofrequency.

Secret RF can be used on the face and body and is also used for stretch marks and scarring. The distinction is important. More energy is not automatically better. The depth and intensity should match the skin being treated.

Where Do Exosomes Fit Into a Skin Treatment Plan?

Exosomes are slightly different because at Secret Aesthetics they can be used topically alongside other procedures rather than necessarily being the main treatment.

Exosomes are involved in cellular communication and the body’s repair processes. In aesthetic treatment, at Secret Aesthetics we use them following procedures including microneedling and radiofrequency microneedling to help soothe and support the skin as it recovers. They can also be incorporated with HydraFacial and Laser Genesis treatments.

This is a good example of why combination treatment does not have to mean simply performing as many procedures as possible. A sensible combination has a purpose. One treatment creates the controlled stimulus, while another supports recovery or addresses a different component of the patient’s concern.

Can You Combine Different Skin Treatments?

Yes, treatments can be combined, but there should always be a clear reason for doing so. Different treatments address different aspects of skin health, so combining them can be useful when more than one concern is contributing to what you see in the skin.

For example, someone with congestion, dehydration and mild redness may benefit from HydraFacial and Laser Genesis, a combination offered at Secret Aesthetics as HydraGenesis. Where pigmentation is present alongside more established texture changes or collagen loss, BBL HERO and Secret RF may be considered, either together where appropriate or carefully sequenced as part of a treatment plan.

Exosomes can also be incorporated alongside treatments such as Secret RF or Dermapen microneedling to support the skin during the post-treatment recovery process.

The aim is not to combine treatments for the sake of doing more. It is to understand the different concerns affecting your skin and choose an approach that addresses them appropriately. If you have several skin concerns, a consultation can help establish whether treatments are best used individually, combined or introduced gradually over time.

FAQs

Which skin treatment is best for me?

The best treatment depends on what you want to improve and what is causing the concern. For example, HydraFacial may be appropriate for dehydration or congestion, while Laser Genesis or BBL HERO may be considered for redness. BBL HERO can also target pigmentation and sun damage, whereas microneedling or Secret RF may be more suitable when texture, scarring or loss of firmness is the priority. A skin assessment helps us decide which approach is most appropriate rather than choosing a treatment based on the concern alone.

How much downtime should I expect after a skin treatment?

Downtime varies considerably between treatments. HydraFacial and Laser Genesis generally involve little disruption to your normal routine, while microneedling and Secret RF can involve more noticeable redness and recovery as the skin responds to treatment. Your practitioner will explain what to expect before treatment so you can choose an option that works with your skin goals and lifestyle.

How many treatments will I need?

Some treatments can provide a noticeable improvement after one appointment, but concerns involving pigmentation, redness, unwanted hair, scarring or collagen often require a course. The number and spacing of sessions will depend on the treatment, the severity of the concern and how your skin responds. Your plan can then be reviewed as treatment progresses rather than deciding on a fixed number of sessions for everyone.

Can I have skin treatments if I use retinol at home?

Potentially, but you may need to stop retinoids and other active skincare for a period before and after certain treatments. The interval depends on the procedure and the product you use, so tell your practitioner exactly what is in your current skincare routine.

Can I wear makeup after a therapy-led facial treatment?

That depends on the treatment. With minimal-downtime procedures you may return to makeup relatively quickly, while treatments that create controlled micro-injury require more careful aftercare. Follow the specific instructions given for your procedure rather than applying the same rule to every treatment.

Should I change my aesthetic treatment plan as my skin improves?

Often, yes. A treatment used initially to correct a concern does not necessarily need to be continued at the same intensity forever. Once the skin has improved, the plan may shift towards maintenance.

Can I start several new skin treatments at once?

It is usually more useful to have the skin assessed first and build a staged plan. Introducing multiple treatments simultaneously can make it harder to assess how your skin responds and whether every component is necessary.

Do I need a consultation even if I already know which treatment I want?

A consultation remains important, particularly for laser, light and energy-based treatments. Skin type, medical history, medication, sun exposure and the exact nature of the concern can all affect whether your preferred treatment is appropriate.

Building a Long-Term Skin Plan at Secret Aesthetics

The treatment your skin needs today may not be the treatment it needs six months from now. Pigmentation can become more noticeable after summer, hydration levels can change through winter, and concerns such as redness, texture, collagen loss or congestion can evolve over time. A good skin plan should adapt with them.

This is also why treatment does not always begin with the most intensive option. For milder concerns, improving hydration and skin condition with HydraFacial may be a sensible starting point. More persistent redness or uneven tone may lead us towards Laser Genesis or BBL HERO, while established textural changes, scarring or loss of firmness may require collagen-focused treatments such as microneedling or Secret RF. Exosomes can also be incorporated into selected plans to support skin recovery following treatment.

At Secret Aesthetics in Harvey Nichols, the aim is to help you understand what your skin needs and which treatment, or combination of treatments, is most appropriate for the results you want to achieve. Your plan can then be adapted over time as your skin changes and responds.

Not sure which treatment is right for your skin? Book a consultation at Secret Aesthetics to have your concerns assessed and understand which treatment, or combination of treatments, could help you achieve healthier, clearer and more even-looking skin over the longer term.
