About Cosmelan:
About Cosmelan Treatement
From the Spanish Mesoestetic Laboratories that specialise in skin pigmentation disorders, the gold standard Cosmelan peel was created as a non-hydroquinone based medium depth chemical peel for an array of pigmentary skin disorders safe for all skin-types. Additionally it improves the sign of sundamaged skin, improves pore size, helps with break outs and enhances the overall luminosity of the skin.
The treatment combines an in-clinic medical strength peel with a home-care regime.
The peel itself contains a variety of active ingredients such as Kojic Acid, Phytic Acid, Ascorbic Acid, Arbutine, Titanium Dioxide and Retinyl Palmitate. These agents block the production of melanin to reduce excessive pigment formation. This process does not make the melanocytes disappear, but simply stops melanin production, without risk of white blemishes appearing, thus, improving the complexion of the skin long term.
Procedure:
The Procedure
There are 3 stages to this treatment.
Stage 1: Following a thorough consultation and assessment to ensure you are eligible for the treatment, your therapist will provide you with the prep kit and you will come back 2 days before the actual peel to ensure your skin is prepped adequately.
Stage 2: On the day of the peel, your skin is cleansed thoroughly, the application is quick and we wait approximately 20 minutes to allow it to absorb properly – you will then leave the clinic with the mask left on your face for 12 hours (8-10 hours on the neck or sensitive areas like the eyes). You can eventually remove the mask at home with lukewarm water.
The therapist will go over all the steps and how to use your at-home products.
Stage 2: You will leave the clinic with a full post-care home treatment regime and instructions. You will need to strictly adhere to this and stop any other topical treatments.
You will be booked in for a review 6 weeks post-peel.
Cosmelan Peel Results:
The Results
The Cosmelan mask is usually applied once but if you have severe pigmentation then a second mask can be applied a couple of weeks after your first treatment to ensure you get the best possible results or alternatively the practitioner may recommend the Dermamelan peel which is more potent. Most people notice a significant improvement after a week and an 80% improvement by 4 weeks. We review you by 6 weeks at which point we can discuss if a second peel is desired. Most people are happy with their results with just 1 peel. Your doctor will advise you on how to use any homecare products which will prevent further pigmentation recurring. Added benefits include plump, hydrated skin and a general rejuvenation of the surface of the skin.
There is no permanent cure for pigmentation. Peels, lasers, skincare and medications only help to temporarily reduce their appearance which is why continuous care is always required with combination therapy which is why we recommend a peel with aftercare products to use continuously. Some people opt for top-up treatments and most of our clients have a combination protocol to stay on top up the results after the peel has done the heavy lifting.
Side Effects of a cosmelan peel:
The Side Effects
The most typical side effects include redness, dryness, peeling and flaking of the skin during the first week following your Cosmelan peel treatment – these are very common and completely normal.
You may feel a tightness of the skin for a couple of days after the mask is removed. You will most certainly experience redness following the removal of the mask and when you first start using the at-home products but this soon subsides after a few days, you will then notice peeling or flaking of the skin during the first week following your Cosmelan peel treatment. Your home-care regime will help to tackle all of this and aid recovery.
Aftercare:
How to look after your treatment area
Please make sure you do not touch or accidentally wipe off the mask post-procedure as you will go home with it on for 12 hours. It is important to go home immediately and stay in a cool room away from any sun. It is paramount that you follow the treatment regime prescribed by your therapist post-procedure. You must not use any other products during this period. A peel is exposing new skin over a very short period of time. This newly exposed skin is very delicate and needs to be protected with a good quality broad-spectrum SPF every 2 hours.
Chemical peels are not a be-all and end-all cure for skin conditions. If good skin care is not practiced, the end results will be adversely affected. It is important to strictly follow the pre and post-care instructions given to you by your clinician.
The day after the peel, your skin will feel hot and tight and may even be slightly swollen – this is all completely normal.
You must avoid too much heat for the next 48 hours: hot showers/baths/saunas/steam rooms.
You must also avoid any strenuous activity or exercise for the next 48 hours – essentially anything that can make you sweat
Avoid the sun completely if possible until the peeling has subsided. Avoid picking at the peeling skin, touching it, rubbing it and putting makeup on.
You will be given a post-peel home-care regime which you can commence once the peeling has stopped which is usually a week after. In the interim it is important to use the combination of moisturiser and healing ointments recommended to you by the therapist.
